The Israel Society for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ISTAM) was established by Professor Markus Reiner from the Department of Mechanics at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Professor Reiner is known as one of the founding fathers of the field of rheology and he served as ISTAM’s first president. In 1950 ISTAM became an adhering organization to the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM). IUTAM was founded in 1922 by Professor Theodore von Kármán from Aachen, Germany, and it currently includes scientists from 55 countries and 18 affiliated organizations.The founding objectives of ISTAM are:
- To promote professional activity in Israel in mechanical sciences and related professions.
- To promote communication and joint activities with international scientists and organizations in mechanics and related areas.
